******** Advance information for the BAA Macclesfield weekend. ********

Numbers are limited to 100 so if you are seriously interested in coming
please book NOW.

BAA Macclesfield Weekend Meeting - Friday 5th – Sunday 7th September 2014

Titled - "Into the deep and dark"

This is an opportunity to find out more about stars and the essential role
that they have played in the origin of life in the universe. The knowledge
that we have is based on work by amateurs and professionals obtained
through practical observation and cosmological theory. The weekend will
include an opportunity to visit the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
in Manchester.

The cost for the two days is FREE for BAA members, Affiliated Society
members, and accompanied children under 16 if booked in advance, and £5.00
for non-members. The cost includes refreshments but not lunch. As numbers
are limited we ask you only to book if you are seriously intending to come.

The programme for the weekend is as follows:

Friday Eve:   Dr Clive Dickinson – 'The Microwave Universe'

Saturday:      Dr Eamonn Kerins – 'The hunt for Earth-2'.

Prof Andrew Lyne –'Cosmic cannon balls - The
formation, life & uses of neutron stars'

Mr Chris Rose - 'Macclesfield AS - Past, present and
future'

Dr John McDonald - 'The Universe: from the earliest
time to the sky we see today'

Dr Stewart Moore - 'Planetary nebulae for the amateur'

Mr Jeff Lashley - 'Experiments in a Cambridgeshire
field - the story of an amateur radio  telescope project'

Sunday:  Visit the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester - including
the CERN Collider Experience

Times:  Friday 19:00 – 21:00, Saturday 09:15 – 18:15
Sunday's Collider Experience 10:30 for 11:00 tour.

Museum entry is free but there will be an opportunity to visit a special
event which will give you a chance to "Step inside the World's Greatest
Experiment - CERN's Large Hadron Collider". We have arranged a special
group rate of £4 for adult entry (it is normally £7) but this only applies
if booked by the deadline of 18th August. We will be on the 11 a.m. tour
and have arranged coach transport from Macclesfield at a cost of £9 return.
You will be able to leave your luggage on the coach as the driver will be
staying with it at all times. Alternatively you can use your own transport
but please arrive at the museum by 10:30.

Full details (including a booking form) and maps can be found on the BAA
website www.britastro.org/macclesfield2014

Gigantic sprites appear over the USA

Space Weather News for June 25, 2014
http://spaceweather.com

SPRITES OVER THE USA: This week, backyard photographers have been observing gigantic red sprites flickering over the USA.  These electrical discharges, which occur high above thunderclouds, resemble enormous jellyfish and their glow can often be seen hundreds of miles away.  A specimen highlighted on today's edition of Space Weather would dwarf Mt. Everest.   For more information and observing tips visit http://spaceweather.com.

SOLAR FLARE ALERTS:  Would you like a call the next time the sun erupts? X-flare alerts are available from http://spaceweathertext.com (text) and http://spaceweatherphone.com (voice).

10 surprising space objects to see in the daytime sky...

This is interesting-I have seen Venus, Satellites (Iridium Flares) Jupiter and Mars in a daytime sky and I have also seen several Comets-mainly in the Morning and Evening twilight-as for Meteors and Supernovae-a little bit more difficult I would say.....

William Bradfield passes away!

Mon Jun 16, 2014 2:47 am (PDT) . Posted by:

"amar sharma" amar10sharmaa

Hello comet world,

I regret to inform you all that William Bradfield, the the legendary comet hunter who discovered all 18 visual comet-bradfields, passed away on June 9 at age 86. He had been suffering from prolonged illness. Rodney Austin informs me of this after which I bring it to you. The world quite does not know about it yet; nothing even on Google. But there has been a discussion going on an Australian forum about it, which confirms the fact:

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=122117

I have just sent an Obituary write up on William Bradfield to S&T.com and Astronomy.com. I hope it officially comes up soon.

This is a very tragic loss for our comet community. RIP Bradfield. :-(

Regards, Amar.

New Sunspot Sparks Double X-Flare

Space Weather News for June 10, 2014
http://spaceweather.com

DOUBLE X-FLARE:  Breaking a weeks-long spell of quiet, the sun erupted on June 10th, producing not one but two X-class solar flares. The source is a new sunspot just emerging over the sun's southeastern limb. This active region is not squarely facing our planet.  However, it will become increasingly geoeffective as it turns toward Earth in the days ahead. Check http://spaceweather.com for details and updates.

SOLAR FLARE ALERTS:  Would you like a call the next time the sun erupts? X-flare alerts are available from http://spaceweathertext.com (text) and http://spaceweatherphone.com (voice).
