NASA orders modifications to stiffen shuttle Discovery's fuel tank

SHUTTLE ENGINEERS CONSIDER BEEFING UP ALL TANK "STRINGERS"

NASA managers Monday directed engineers to add stiffeners to some
structural ribs in the shuttle Discovery's external tank. Another meeting
is planned for Thursday to discuss installing so called "radius-block"
stiffeners to the tops of the remaining stringers that form the tank's
familiar ribbed midsection. Work to beef up all 108 stringers almost
certainly would delay Discovery's launch to late February.

INSPECTIONS REVEAL FOUR MORE CRACKS ON DISCOVERY'S TANK

Engineers examining the shuttle Discovery's external tank in the Vehicle
Assembly Building have found four more small cracks in three structural
ribs, or stringers, on the opposite side of the tank from the orbiter that
could not be inspected at the launch pad. Four cracks on the shuttle side
of the tank were repaired earlier, and it's not yet clear what, if any,
additional work might be needed to develop the "flight rationale" needed
for another launch attempt as early as Feb. 3.

2010 CONCLUDES WITH ARIANE ROCKET'S 199TH LAUNCH

Two commercial satellites for the expansion of communications services
from space were launched atop an Ariane 5 rocket Wednesday, capping
another successful year for the heavy-lift booster that saw a dozen
payloads amounting to 99,725 pounds deployed in 2010.

The Road Less Traveled


The Road Less Traveled:
On Jan. 4, 2004, Spirit--the first of two NASA Mars Exploration Rovers--landed on the Red Planet for what was to be a 90-day mission. This image, acquired on sol 127 (May 12, 2004), shows the path the rover traveled on its way to the base of the "Columbia Hills." The hills can be seen silhouetted against the horizon on the far left side .

Since sol 2210 (March 22, 2010), Spirit has been silent, and the project's scientists continue to listen for Spirit with the Deep Space Network and Mars Odyssey orbiter. The project is also conducting a paging technique called "Sweep & Beep" to stimulate the rover. Since the period of peak solar activity occurs in mid-March 2011, leaving Spirit plenty of occasion to respond. Spirit's sister spacecraft Opportunity continues to explore Mars, arriving in December 2010 at the 80-meter (262-foot) diameter Santa Maria crater on its journey to Endeavour crater.

HERE COME THE QUADRANTID METEORS
 
The New Year opens with very favourable conditions for the Quadrantids, one
of the three most active regular annual showers. Active from January 1-6,
the Quadrantids have been poorly observed in most recent years thanks to a
combination of factors - a very narrow period of high activity, poor January
weather, and moonlight interference in at least one year out of three!
However, when the shower was last well-covered by BAA observers, a peak ZHR
of 100-120 m/h was found. Unfortunately, activity is close to peak levels
for only about six hours: at other times, only a 'trickle' of a few meteor
per hour might be detected. The Quadrantid radiant (RA 15h 28m Dec +50o)
actually lies in northern Boötes (in a region occupied by the now defunct
constellation of Quadrans Muralis), and from the latitudes of the British
Isles it is circumpolar.
 
Timing of the Quadrantid peak in January 2011 is quite favourable from the
UK perspective, especially as the peak coincides with new Moon, so there
will a complete absence of interference from moonlight. The shower maximum
is expected around Jan 04d 00h UT, midnight at our longitudes. Although the
radiant is rather low in the northern sky during the evening hours, it will
be rising higher by midnight and it climbs to a very favourable elevation as
dawn approaches.  Observations in the hours after midnight on January 3/4
will be the most productive.

Much of the high activity close to the peak is comprised of moderately
bright to faint meteors. As a result of particle-sorting, brighter
Quadrantids (produced by larger meteoroids) become more numerous following the maximum, and this might be evident by dawn on January 4. Quadrantids are, like the Geminids, relatively slow meteors, with an atmospheric entry
velocity of 42 km/sec. The brighter shower members are sometimes strongly
coloured (often blue or green).
 
The stream's dynamic orbital history - much perturbed by Jupiter's gravity -
has made identification of its parent body complicated. Recent studies have
suggested that the Quadrantids may be debris from asteroid 2003EH1 (another
similarity with the Geminids!), a possible break-up product of Comet 1490Y1
following the latter's close approach to Jupiter in 1650.
 
The Quadrantids can certainly be listed as a shower very much in need of
observation - so why not make it your New Year's Resolution to start 2011
with a few hours of meteor watching between midnight and dawn on January 4.
And, observers who have been out Quadrantid watching during the early
morning hours of January 4 can reward themselves with a most interesting
partial eclipse of the Sun at sunrise that morning.

What's Up for January? Meteor shower fireworks ring in the New Year!

Hello and welcome. I'm Jane Houston Jones at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

If you didn't catch last month's Geminid meteor shower, don't worry about it. The January Quadrantids will be just as good – and maybe even better, depending on your location.

They peak on January 3rd and 4th, which is a dark, new-moon night this month. This means that there won't be any annoying moonlight to spoil the fireworks display.

This could be the best shower of the year.

The peak of this meteor shower is best seen from Europe. Here in the Western Hemisphere the radiant doesn't even rise till after midnight. And this shower has a very sharp peak, which means that most meteors are visible for only several hours, instead of several days, like the famous Perseids of August.

Look in the northeast between and below the familiar Big and Little Dippers and the bright star Arcturus. This shower isn't named for the modern constellation in which it appears, but for an obsolete one called Quadrans Muralis. It depicts an early instrument called a Mural Quadrant, which was used to observe and measure stellar positions. It's similar to today's sextant.

There's more to enjoy this wintry month.

Venus, Mercury and Saturn continue to dazzle early risers before dawn. And by month-end Saturn rises before midnight. Jupiter, on the other hand, sets before 9:30 p.m. by month-end.

In February the repurposed spacecraft Stardust-NExT will fly by comet Tempel 1, which was first visited by NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft in 2005.

On the morning of 4 January 2011 Peter Grego will be performing a
LIVE WEBCAST of the partial eclipse of the Sun.
 
The webcast will take place on 4 January 2011 between 07:00-
09:45 UT.  The live webcast is planned using a 102mm refractor,
afocal method using a ToUcam 740 webcam.
 
If the events are clouded out a real time computer simulation will be
broadcast.

QUADRANTID METEOR SHOWER: Sky watchers in the northern hemisphere should be alert for meteors before sunrise on Tuesday, Jan. 4th. Earth is about to pass through a narrow stream of debris from shattered comet 2003 EH1, the parent of the annual Quadrantid meteor shower. SUNRISE ECLIPSE THIS TUESDAY MORNING

As the Sun rises, shortly after 08:00 UT this Tuesday morning, on 4 January,
a partial eclipse of the Sun will be visible right across the British Isles,
weather permitting of course. This eclipse will also be observable across
much of Europe, North Africa and central Asia.

The eclipse magnitude (the percentage of the Sun's diameter that will be
obscured) from European cities such as Madrid (58 per cent), Paris (73 per
cent), London (75 per cent), and Copenhagen (83 per cent) will give early
morning risers on 4 January a great chance to view a sunrise eclipse with
interesting scenery in the foreground. The greatest magnitude will be
observed from northern Sweden at 08:51 UT where the dark disk of the Moon
will cut across 86 per cent of the solar diameter at sunrise.

In the British Isles, from locations north and west of an imaginary line
stretching roughly from the mouth of the Humber estuary down to Bournemouth,
maximum eclipse will occur with the Sun still below the horizon, so that at
sunrise the amount of the Sun which is obscured will already be decreasing.
From locations south and east of this imaginary line, including East Anglia,
London, and the South-East of England, greatest eclipse will be visible with
the Sun just above the south-eastern horizon. From eastern and south-eastern
England the eclipse magnitude (the percentage of the solar diameter
obscured) will vary between 77 per cent along the north Norfolk coast to 74
per cent at Dungeness.

From places such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester,
Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Bristol and Plymouth, for example, observers
will miss greatest eclipse, but will still be able to witness a substantial
partial eclipse at sunrise, with a magnitude ranging from 59 per cent in
Edinburgh (sunrise 08:43 UT) to 69 per cent in Liverpool (sunrise 08:27m UT)
and Plymouth (sunrise 08:16 UT).

Observers should go out a short time before sunrise and, if they have a
clear, unobstructed south-eastern horizon, they will see the Sun rise
partially eclipsed. It will look like "a broad yellow smile". From much of
the British Isles, maximum eclipse occurs before sunrise, so the amount of
the Sun which is obscured will decrease steadily from sunrise until the
partial eclipse ends at around 09:30 UT.

From London, sunrise is at 08:05 UT with maximum eclipse occurring just
seven minutes later at 08:12 UT, when 75 per cent of the solar diameter will
be obscured. The table below lists the times of sunrise and the
circumstances of the partial eclipse for several locations in the UK:

(Note that apart from the first three locations listed, maximum eclipse
occurs before sunrise.)

Clearly with the Sun very low over the south-eastern horizon, even from
locations near London and along the coasts of East Anglia and the
South-East, it will be a difficult but interesting event to observe. One can
only hope that the clouds keep away that winter morning!


WARNING: Viewing the Sun at any time requires adequate eye protection such as that provided by special filters made for safe solar viewing, or by
indirect viewing methods such as pinhole projection, but DO supervise
children closely at all times.
