Double Flyby Alert

Worth looking at-better with Binoculars-guess I'll get behind the Village Church again where there is an Excellent South West right round to the Eastern Horizon to see this-clear skies....
 
See the 2 ISS passes tonight from behind the Village Church where there is a good all round Horizon-the first pass was the ISS with the STS still attached but the 21.45 pass I could just vaguely pick out the separation of the craft-all good fun and I will be looking again tomorrow for the 20.35 pass as well as a possible vague 22.09 pass if clear....

DISCOVERY ASTRONAUTS FINISH MISSION'S LAST SPACEWALK

and final spacewalk Saturday evening, a seven-hour excursion outside the
International Space Station that deployed a payload mounting mechanism,

SPACE SHUTTLE MAIN ENGINE NOZZLE LEAKS BEING STUDIED

Engineers are looking into what might have caused more than 300
microscopic leaks in the nozzle of a space shuttle main engine used to
help launch Endeavour in July. But officials Friday characterized the
issue as relatively minor, saying the leaks were well below any threshold
that could cause an in-flight problem.

Saturn Moon Could Power 150 Billion Labor Day Barbecues

Since its discovery by Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens in 1655, Saturn's most massive
moon, Titan, has been known as a place of mystery and intrigue. The large, cloud-enshrouded
moon is such a scientific enigma that for the past five years, it has been targeted by NASAs
Cassini spacecraft with more than 60 probing flybys. One of its latest findings could be a
valuable asset to future generations of space explorers hunting for materials to whip up a Labor
Day barbecue.

"Titan's atmosphere is extremely rich in an assortment of hydrocarbon chemicals, including
propane, which we use to fill our barbecue tanks," said Cassini scientist Conor Nixon of the
University of Maryland, College Park. "Titan's atmospheric inventory would fuel about 150
billion barbecue cookouts, enough for several thousand years of Labor Days."

For those who are burger, barbecue or Titan challenged, propane is a three-carbon alkane (a
chemical compound consisting of carbon and hydrogen), that is non-toxic and heavier than air.
With its low boiling point of minus 43.6 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 42 degrees Centigrade),
propane vaporizes as soon as it is released from its pressurized container. Here on Earth, propane
is commonly used as a fuel for forklifts, flamethrowers, residential central heating, portable
stoves, hot air balloons, and – of course – barbecues. On other worlds propane is an untapped
resource.

This gas of many terrestrial uses was first discovered in Titan's atmosphere back in 1980 when
NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft flew past the Saturnian system. Over the years, both ground and
space-based instruments have added to the research, but accurately quantifying the amount of
propane on Titan has proved elusive. Then, in 2004, the Cassini spacecraft entered orbit around
Saturn.

Measuring the amount of propane on Titan is important to scientists because the gas is a very
complex molecule, and its signature in the infrared spectrum is close to those of several molecules
scientists are hoping to discover in Titan's atmosphere.

"It was not so much that measuring propane was our endgame, but it helps enormously in our
hunt for other complex molecules," said Nixon. "These include pyrimidines that are potential
building blocks for biological molecules, such as the nuceleobases of our DNA." If we can detect
them on Titan, that would be very significant."

Propane on Titan was measured using data from Cassini's Composite Infrared Spectrometer
instrument.  During multiple flybys of the moon between June 2004 and June 2008, the
instrument measured infrared light from the edge of Titan's atmosphere. After a detailed analysis
of the gas's characteristic 'emission bands' or signature, using computer predictions backed by
the latest laboratory research into its infrared spectrum, the Composite Infrared Spectrometer
team came up with an estimate of the amount of propane in Titan's atmosphere So exactly how
much propane does it take to fire 150 billion cookouts?

"We estimate there are nearly 700 million barrels of propane on Titan, said Nixon. "That is
enough to fill six-billion 20-pound tanks of liquefied propane gas. It sounds like a huge amount,
but that would satisfy total U.S. consumption of propane for only 18 months."

Which still leaves, with regards to Saturn's biggest moon, one Labor Day staple still to be
determined. How many hamburgers could future generations of outer-planet explorers grill using
Titan's atmospheric propane?

"A dozen at a time, that's two trillion hamburgers," said Cassini's Nixon, "assuming you stop at
medium-well."

Nixon is the lead author on a paper about propane on Titan to be published in an upcoming issue
of Planetary and Space Science.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and
the Italian Space Agency. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.
JPL manages the mission for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in
Washington. Cassini's Composite Infrared Spectrometer team is based at NASA's Goddard
Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.

Doing the math: How do we get from  "150 billion barbeque cookouts" to "two trillion" burgers?

You can fit 700 million barrels of propane into about six billion 20-pound tanks of liquefied
propane gas (LPG). As most Labor Day cookouts will probably occur on this planet, we will use
Earth as our barbecue laboratory. On Earth, a full tank of LPG burns for about nine hours –
enough time to turn out 25 to 30 meals. That brings us to about 150 to 180 billion meals. If you
average 12 medium-well patties per meal, then we're talking about 2 trillion burgers. When it
comes to figuring out how many hot dogs could be cooked, you're on your own.

GLYCINE DISCOVERED IN COMET

NASA scientists have discovered traces of the amino acid glycine in
samples of Comet Wild 2 returned by the Stardust spacecraft.  Stardust
passed through dense gas and dust surrounding the icy nucleus of
Wild 2 on 2004 January 2.  As the spacecraft shot past, a special
collection grid filled with aerogel -- a novel sponge-like material
that is more than 99% empty space -- 'gently' captured samples of the
comet's gas and dust.  The grid was stowed in a capsule that detached
itself from the spacecraft and parachuted to Earth on 2006 January 15.
Since then, scientists have been analyzing the samples to learn a bit
about comet formation and our Solar System's history.

Preliminary analysis detected glycine in the aluminium foil from the
sides of tiny chambers that held the aerogel in the collection grid
and also in a sample of the aerogel.  However, since terrestrial life
uses glycine, at first the team was unable to rule out contamination
from sources on Earth.  It was possible that the glycine originated
from handling or manufacture of the Stardust spacecraft itself.  The
new research used isotopic analysis to adjudicate on that possibility.
A glycine molecule from space will tend to have more carbon-13 atoms
in it than glycine from Earth.  The team found that the Stardust
glycine has an extra-terrestrial carbon-isotope signature, indicating
that it originated in the comet.


OLD STAR SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON OLD TIMES

The chemical composition of the old star BD +44 493, recently
investigated with the Subaru telescope, may have relevance to how the
earliest stars developed when the Universe was young.  According to
the Big Bang theory, the Universe was initially composed almost
entirely of hydrogen and helium.  The creation of heavier elements
occurred later, through the process of nucleosynthesis, in which
more-complex atomic nuclei were formed inside stars.  Therefore, the
proportion of heavier elements in an astronomical object (its
'metallicity') may provide an indication of its age.  Older stars have
lower metallicities than younger stars such as our Sun.  Because their
atmospheres usually preserve the chemical composition of the gas from
which they formed, old, low-metallicity stars retain evidence of the
chemical abundances that existed at the time of their own creation --
information that provides clues to processes occurring early in the
history of the Universe.

That idea has prompted searches for stars with very low metal content;
one called HE1327-2326 has the record for the lowest iron content ever
seen, but its ratio of carbon and nitrogen relative to iron was
remarkably high.  Another very iron-deficient star, HE0107-5240, shows
a similar pattern.  Astronomers supposed that the metal-enrichment
histories of those two stars were quite different from that of other
low-metal stars.  Spectroscopic studies of a larger sample of
metal-deficient stars have been made with the Subaru telescope in an
effort to provide more clues about their early development.  At one
point a ninth-magnitude star was observed in twilight as a reference
star for the programme.  Analysis showed that that star, BD +44 493,
contained only 1/5000 of the heavy elements of the Sun and was 10
times brighter than any star of such low metallicity known so far.
A follow-up observation showed a relatively high abundance of carbon,
as in the cases mentioned above, and gave abundance ratios for other
elements.  The best explanation of the findings is that the star was
formed from a gas cloud polluted by a supernova explosion of a
first-generation massive star, which yielded carbon-rich but
metal-poor material.  The measurements of BD +44 493 have thus
provided new evidence of the type of supernovae present in the very
early phase of the Galaxy.


EXTRA-SOLAR PLANET OUGHT NOT TO EXIST

A photometric survey called WASP has discovered a planet that has ten
times the mass of Jupiter but orbits its star in less than a day.
That poses a challenge to the experts' understanding of tidal
interactions in planetary systems.  The planet, called WASP-18b,
belongs to a now-common class of extra-solar planets known as 'hot
Jupiters'.  It is so massive, and so close to its star -- only about
three stellar radii away -- that tidal interactions between star and
planet ought to cause the planet to spiral inwards to its destruction
in less than a million years.  Yet, astronomers think that the WASP-18
parent star is about a billion years old, so either we have to admit
that the likelihood of catching sight of WASP-18b at this critical
time is only about one in a thousand, or else tidal dissipation in the
WASP-18 system somehow manages to be a thousand times less than in our
Solar System.  If the planet's remaining existence is as short as
predicted, the orbital decay should be measurable within a decade.


CYGNUS X-1

Since its discovery 45 years ago, Cygnus X-1 has been one of the most
intensively studied cosmic X-ray sources.  About a decade after its
discovery, it secured a place in the history of astronomy when a
combination of X-ray and optical observations led to the conclusion
that it was a black hole, the first such identification.  The Cygnus
X-1 system is thought to consist of a black hole with a mass about 10
solar masses in a close orbit with a blue supergiant star with a mass
of about 20 Suns.  Gas flowing away from the supergiant in a fast
stellar wind is focused by the black hole, and some of it forms a disc
that spirals into the hole.  The gravitational energy released by the
infalling gas powers the X-ray emission from Cygnus X-1.  Although
more than a thousand scientific articles have been published on Cygnus
X-1, its status as a nearby black hole continues to attract the
interest of scientists seeking to understand the nature of such holes
and how they affect their environment.  Observations with Chandra and
XMM-Newton have helped to investigate the properties of the stellar
wind that fuels the emission, and determining the hole's rate of spin.
The conclusion is that Cygnus X-1 is spinning unusually slowly.


STAR-BIRTH RATIO NOT FIXED

Doubt has been cast on a long-held beliefs about how stars are formed.
It has been thought that in a family of new-born stars the ratio of
massive stars to lesser ones was always pretty much the same -- for
instance, that for every star 20 times more massive than the Sun or
larger, there would be 500 stars the mass of the Sun or less.  The
distribution of stellar masses at birth is called the 'initial mass
function' (IMF).  Most of the light we see from galaxies comes from
stars of the highest mass, while the total mass is dominated by those
of lower masses.  By measuring the amount of light from a population
of stars, and making some corrections for the stars' ages, astronomers
can use the IMF to estimate the total mass of that population.

Results for different galaxies can be compared only if the IMF is the
same everywhere, but astronomers have now shown that the ratio of
high-mass to low-mass newborn stars differs between galaxies.  For
instance, small 'dwarf' galaxies form many more low-mass stars than
expected.  To arrive at that finding, researchers used galaxies from
the HIPASS Survey (H I Parkes All-Sky Survey).  Selecting galaxies on
the basis of their neutral hydrogen gave a sample of many different
shapes and sizes, unbiased by their star-formation histories.  The
astronomers measured two tracers of star formation, ultraviolet and
H-alpha emissions, in 103 galaxies with the GALEX satellite and the
1.5-m CTIO optical telescope in Chile.  H-alpha emission traces the
presence of very massive stars called O stars, which are born with
masses more than 20 times that of the Sun.  The UV emission traces
both O stars and the less-massive B stars -- overall, stars more than
three times the mass of the Sun.  The ratio of H-alpha to UV emission
was found to vary from galaxy to galaxy, implying that the IMF did
too, at least at its upper end.  That confirms a tentative suggestion
made by French astronomers in 1987.  The new research suggests that
the IMF is sensitive to the physical conditions of the star-forming
region.


GIANT GALAXY HOSTS THE MOST DISTANT SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE

Astronomers have been able to detect the giant galaxy surrounding the
most distant known supermassive black hole.  The galaxy, so distant
that it is seen as it was 12.8 billion years ago, is as large as the
Milky Way galaxy and its black hole has a mass at least a billion
times that of our Sun.  The galaxy and black hole must have formed
rather 'rapidly' in the early Universe.  Knowledge of the host
galaxies of supermassive black holes is needed if astronomers are ever
to understand how galaxies and black holes have evolved together.
After forming, supermassive black holes continue to grow because their
gravity draws in surrounding matter.  The energy released in that
process accounts for the light emitted from the regions around the
holes.  Studying host galaxies in the distant Universe has been
difficult because the light from the vicinity of the hole swamps that
from the faint galaxy around it.  In the case referred to here, the
scientists used CCDs on the Subaru telescope on Mauna Kea.  They found
that 40% of the near-infrared light came from the galaxy itself and
60% from the clouds of material surrounding and illuminated by the
black hole.


INDIA LOSES MOON SATELLITE LINKS

India's space agency has reported that communication with the
Chandrayaan-1 Moon-orbiting spacecraft was lost abruptly just over a
week ago.  The craft was launched last October in what was billed as a
two-year mission.  Its launch, from the southern state of Andhra
Pradesh, was a major step for India as it seeks to keep pace with
other space-faring nations in Asia.  The probe was intended to orbit
the Moon, compiling a 3-D atlas of the surface and mapping the
distribution of elements and minerals.  Powered by a single solar
panel generating about 700 watts, the probe carries five instruments
built in India and six constructed in other countries, including the
US, Britain and Germany.  The mission was expected to cost £45m,
considerably less than Japanese and Chinese probes sent to the Moon
last year.

Raging Fire Threatens Mount Wilson

Update, 2:00 p.m. PDT Thursday, Sept. 3: Progress has been made controlling the fire overall; it's now 38% contained after burning more than 225 square miles of the mountainous national forest.

Six miles away, the amateur-built Stony Ridge Observatory with its 30-inch telescope seems to have survived so far.

Update, 11:30 a.m. PDT Wednesday: Mike Simmons writes: "The observatory is still threatened but will certainly be saved due to great preparations over the last few days and the stand the firefighters are making. While nothing is ever guaranteed in fires like this. . . the situation is about as good as it can be with flames advancing on the observatory. We are all quite optimistic."

Update, 7:00 a.m. PDT Wednesday, Sept. 2: No change overnight. Officials say "aggressive water and gel drops from aircraft" helped keep back the fire.

Update, 5:40 p.m. PDT Tuesday, Sept. 1: The Los Angeles Times reports: "Firefighters were frantically trying to save the historic astronomical observatory and dozens of critical TV and radio antennas from destruction. By 3 p.m., the fire was approaching closer than ever from two directions: one-half mile to the north and three-quarters of a mile to the west.

" 'We expect the fire to hit the Mt. Wilson facilities between 5 p.m. today and 2 a.m. Wednesday morning,' said Los Angeles County Fire Department Deputy Chief James Powers. 'Right now, we're conducting controlled burns around the perimeter in preparation for the impending fire's arrival. We're also bringing in trucks and special equipment to coat all of the structures with protective gel and foam if necessary.'

". . .As he spoke from his temporary headquarters in the observatory's main office, myriad controlled burns set beneath canyon oaks and old cedars cloaked the mountaintop with dense acrid smoke. . . .

"Chainsaws could be heard in every direction in the surrounding forest. Massive earth movers were being unloaded off flatbed trucks nearby. Powers said authorities had deliberately delayed diverting firefighters and equipment to the scene until the complex was in imminent danger.

" 'That time is now,' Powers said. Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Martin said, 'We are going to burn, cut, foam and gel. And if that doesn't work, we're going to pray. This place is worth a lot, but it's not worth dying for.' "

Observatory director Hal McAlister, after talking with Powers, is very confident that the observatory will be saved; see his relocated fire blog. There are 150 firefighters onsite, along with observatory personnel, with no plans to leave.

Update, 2:10 p.m. PDT Tuesday: The TV footage going around the internet of smoke billowing up from around the observatory domes is merely from backfires (controlled burns to consume flammable brush) being set by the truckloads of firefighters who returned this morning to Mount Wilson's summit.

Those backfires were augmented by multiple drops of water — 7,200 gallons at a time — by a Martin Mars "Super Scooper" aircraft. All this, as well as additional brush clearing by the fire crews, is in anticipation of the wildfire's arrival at the summit sometime this evening or early Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately, visual updates from the hardy webcam mounted on the observatory's 150-foot-tall Solar Tower have ceased, likely due to a backfire taking out the line from the facility's web server. The final image came at 1:49:06 p.m. PDT.

Update, 10:20 a.m. PDT Tuesday: Some good news from observatory superintendent Dave Jurasevich, who writes: "I just got off the phone with USFS Fire Dispatch at 9:40 a.m. PDT this morning. I was informed that fire crews have been reestablished on the ground at Mount Wilson to defend the observatory. If the fire continues to burn toward Mount Wilson in the direction it has been burning and does not significantly change direction, we are looking good."

Observatory director Hal McAlister adds, "The humidity is up and the temperature is a bit lower, so, all in all, things are looking more promising than they have in the last few days."

Update, 7:00 a.m. PDT, Tuesday: Despite the loss of the summit's primary power line, Mount Wilson's webcam is still working, and its westward view at dawn shows standing trees and lots of smoke — but no flame — as shown below.

Yesterday fire officials blanketed the area with aerial drops of fire-retardant chemicals, a move designed to let the fire burn around the historic observatory and the nearby farm of transmission towers.

Overall, the Station Fire now encompasses 190 square miles (490 km² or 121,000 acres) and has destroyed at least 53 homes. It remains only 5% contained. Officials say full containment may not be possible until September 15th.

Update, 7:10 p.m. PDT Monday: The summit webcam, the only "observer" remaining on the deserted Mt. Wilson peak, shows lots of smoke but no flame. Fire crews have been evacuated not only from the summit but also from the nearest staging area, about 5 miles away, due to danger of being surrounded and cut off.

Update, 11:15 a.m. PDT Monday: The Los Angeles Times reports:
"Crews battling the Station Fire believe that it's only a matter of time before the deadly blaze hits Mt. Wilson, but officials are hopeful that frantic work by hand crews and aircraft dropping flame retardant will protect the communications centers there.

" 'There is a good chance the fire will hit Mt. Wilson today,' said Ray Dombroski, spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service. 'The fire is currently on two sides of Mt. Wilson, about one-half mile to the north and about one mile southwest.'

Update, 11 a.m. PDT Monday: Mike Simmons writes to us:
"I was surprised and delighted when I got up this morning to find that Mt. Wilson had not been overrun by the fire during the night. The fire has almost doubled in size during the night but it seems it has not proceeded along the last mile of the ridge to Mt. Wilson. The firefighters have been withdrawn from the observatory grounds. Presumably they have also been withdrawn from the communications facilities, which are the highest priority since they include broadcast facilities for most area TV and radio as well as cell phones and various other types.

"Today will likely be the crux. The observatory has been prepared with fire retardant dropped from planes and sprayed on structures. The tree thinning of the last few years will pay off, and some emergency brush clearing was done by the crews over the last couple days."

Update, 9:10 a.m. PDT Monday: Observatory superintendant Dave Jurasevich writes to us:

"I was able to get back up to the Observatory [Sunday] by hitching a ride on a Fire Department helicopter and we were able to ready all of our infrastructure systems for the upcoming burn. At 7:30 a.m. [Monday] morning all of the firefighters were ordered off Mount Wilson because of the imminent danger, so we were also asked to leave rather than shelter-in-place in the 100-inch dome. . . . The Mount Wilson Observatory is now in the hands of the big air tankers and God. I'm really heartbroken."

Original posting (Sunday Aug. 30, 2009): Right now a tense and terrifying drama is playing out in the San Gabriel Mountains, which mark the northern rim of the Los Angeles Basin. What started as a modest forest fire along the Angeles Crest Highway on the afternoon of August 26th has become a rampaging, out-of-control conflagration that is only 5% contained. So far it has engulfed some 135 square miles (345 km²) and forced the evacuation of nearly 7,000 homes.

But that's not all — by late Sunday the "Station Fire" had moved to within 2 miles of Mount Wilson Observatory, and it threatens to overrun not only the historic telescopes there, and the cutting-edge CHARA interferometric array, but also a dense crowd of television and radio transmitters and other key communications links at the summit.

For the past two days I've been watching the automated webcam located on the observatory's 150-foot-tall solar tower. The webcam happens to point westward, the direction from which the flames are advancing. Images from Sunday night, sequenced above, show the fire's ferocity in the adjacent canyons. (Heavy demand has made the webcam site almost inaccessible as of Monday.)

Sunday morning I reached observatory director Harold McAlister, who (along with his staff) spent a sleepless night after a forced evacuation. "All indications are that the U.S. Forest Service and California Division of Forestry are pulling out all the stops on fighting the Station Fire," he said. "I understand there are some 80 firefighters and 10 trucks along with a Hotshot crew of Native Americans from Arizona stationed on site to defend the observatory" and the broadcast towers next to it.

Despite some optimism Sunday afternoon that the major outbreaks weren't in the summit's immediate vicinity, a Los Angeles Times report stated that fire officials expected the summit to be overrun Sunday evening or early Monday. The U.S. Forest service decided to keep its fire crew in place at the summit overnight — "a critical aspect to the survivability of the observatory should the fire sweep across it," McAlister explains.

Throughout Sunday crews cleared tinder-dry brush from around the complex and treated wooden structures to make them less vulnerable. On his fire blog, McAlister said that he made on-site housing available for them to take showers and rest. "These are extraordinary people who say they are just doing their job," he writes, "whereas to us they are preparing to save a world-class observatory.

Located at an altitude of 5,700 feet (1,740 m), Mount Wilson Observatory got its start in 1904 when George Ellery Hale signed a free, 99-year lease for 40 acres at the summit to build world-class telescopes. Then Hale erected the Snow Solar Telescope (1905), a 60-inch reflector (the world's largest when completed in 1908), the 150-foot Solar Tower, and finally the 100-inch Hooker Telescope (1918).

Despite being swamped with light pollution from the 13 million residents to its immediate south and southeast, the observatory has regained much of its scientific relevance. In recent years, Mount Wilson has served as a testbed for adaptive-optics and interferometric imaging. It's the main facility of Georgia State University's Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) and the site of the University of California's Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI).

Over the weekend (and Monday as well) the Station Fire has also kept NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory closed to all noncritical personnel. Officially JPL is in Pasadena, California, but technically it's in the town of La Cañada Flintridge, which has been posting hourly updates about the rapidly spreading inferno. JPL is not considered in danger; its shutdown was due to the air quality. Among the activities suspended as a result was the operation of the Spirit rover on Mars.

The siting of observatories on remote mountaintops places them at great risk from forest fires, especially where climates have turned dryer in the last decade or two. In November 2007 the Poomacha Fire came near, but did not damage, Palomar Observatory east of San Diego. Likewise the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory had a close call during the Aspen Fire in June 2003.

Australia's Mount Stromlo Observatory wasn't so lucky — it was totally destroyed by a wildfire in July 2003.

In Tandem

As part the STS-128 mission's first spacewalk, astronauts Danny Olivas and Nicole Stott (right) removed an empty ammonia tank from the station's truss and temporarily stowed it on the station's robotic arm. Olivas and Stott also retrieved the European Technology Exposure Facility (EuTEF) and Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) from the Columbus laboratory module and installed them on Discovery’s payload bay for return.

Preventive Care Continues; Science on Hold

PASADENA, Calif. -- During analysis of four safe-mode events this year, engineers for
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter project have identified a vulnerability to the effects of
subsequent events.  They are currently developing added protection to eliminate this
vulnerability while they continue analysis of the string of incidents this year in which the
spacecraft has spontaneously rebooted its computer or switched to a backup computer.

The team is keeping the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in a precautionary "safe" mode, with
healthy power, temperatures and communications, while continuing analysis and precautions
subsequent to the latest rebooting, on Aug. 26.  Science observations will likely not resume for
several weeks while this preventive care is the mission's priority.

The analysis identified one possible but unlikely scenario jeopardizing the spacecraft. This
scenario would require two computer resets, each worse than any so far, occurring within
several minutes of each other in a certain pattern.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, at Mars since 2006, has met the mission's science goals and
returned more data than all other Mars missions combined. It completed its primary science
phase of operations in November 2008 but remains an important contributor to science and to
future landed missions. Continuing science observations are planned when the spacecraft is
brought out of its current precautionary mode.

Los Angeles -- The recent wildfire of the Los Angeles area that started on Wednesday, August 26, has an effect on many people who live in this area. Looking out of a window does not have the same summer look as it has had during the last few months.

The usual beautiful blue sky is not there to be seen. Replacing this sky is a smoky gray haze mixed with a partly white and blue overcast. This is to be seen miles and miles in almost every direction of the city of Los

There were complaints of ashes in yards, strong odor of smoke inside houses, and some people thought they were catching a cold due to the unclear air all around them. Many people, against their will, were forced to evacuate. They did not want to leave their homes. The good news has been that the weather is very favorable. Had it been windy, there would have been disaster.

This spreading fire not only disturbed the people who were in direct contact with this disaster, but it was greatly disturbing to others as well.

Luca Bertello, an assistant astronomy researcher at UCLA, is now relieved when he heard of the news on September 1 that the UCLA 150-foot solar tower at the Mount Wilson Observatory had not undergone any damages.

It is understandable why Bertello and others who are involved in a research project were so disturbed when they feared the fire would come to this tower. They have been taking daily magnetic field measurements of the sun's surface since 1970.

Staff observers who live at the observatory complex were evacuated a few days ago. Fire fighters were also taken off the top of the mountain as the fie approached the site. Aircraft dropped fire retardant over the entire site. It was at this time when Bertello felt that the risk was high.

He recently said that because the fire is now under control, the outlook looks more promising.

"The fire crews did a terrific job controlling it," he said.

A webcam mounted on top of the tower has been taking photos that appear on a website every two minutes. Photos from the webcam have been used by the news media to get an aerial view of the smoke in the surrounding area and to follow the progression of the fire.

Firefighters in the U.S. western state of California have successfully pushed back a wildfire threatening a historic observatory north of Los Angeles. Officials said Thursday a firefighting force atop Mount Wilson managed to keep the flames from reaching the observatory and critical communication towers on the mountain.

The wildfire near Los Angeles has burned nearly 57,000 hectares of land, making it the largest wildfire in Los Angeles county's history.

By Thursday, safety officials had lifted all evacuation orders for residential areas, allowing people to return to their homes. Officials say the fire, which has burned for more than a week, is now 28 percent contained.

Investigators are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. Deputy incident commander Carlton Joseph said Wednesday investigators believe the fire was caused by humans. Carlton said investigators are still trying to determine if the blaze was started on purpose or by accident. 

The fire destroyed more than 60 homes in the area, forced thousands of people to evacuate, and led to the death of two firefighters. The men died Sunday when their truck rolled off a step embankment. 

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visited firefighters at a Los Angeles base camp Wednesday. The governor said of the eight wildfires currently burning across the state of California, three have been contained.

Earlier this week, fire commander Mike Dietrich said it could take another two weeks to contain the fire.
