Blue Moons and Atmospheric Radiation

TRANSCONTINENTAL SPACE WEATHER BALLOON EXPERIMENT:  Last week, Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus conducted a unique experiment in atmospheric radiation involving airplanes and high-altitude balloons launched simultaneously almost 3000 miles apart. [BAA-ebulletin 00866] Ephemeris for the Neptune bright Storm

This e-bulletin follows on from the E-bulletin No 00865 concerning the discovery of a bright storm on Neptune
One of the co-discoverers, Ricardo Hueso has kindly provided an initial ephemeris for this storm via John S. Sussenbach.

The predicted ephemeris of CM longitude given below was generated via the WinJUPOS software.

[BAA-ebulletin 00865] Bright spot on Neptune

Damian Peach has kindly forwarded details of the detection of a large and very bright spot on Neptune on 13 July 2015 by Ricardo Hueso and José F. Rojas while observing with the 2.2m telescope at Calar Alto  Observatory.
Their images were taken using filters in the 0.35 – 1 micron and 1.0 to 1,7 micro bands. Currently no ephemeris is available.
Due to its small angular size, the detection of features on Neptune is very difficult. However last year,  Anthony Wesley showed that it was possible to image such features with large amateur telescopes and suitable filters.
The professional recommendation (Agustin Sanchez Lavega)  is to use broad band I filters or  IR long pass filters. (above 750nm).

If this spot is detected, please send any observations to the BAA Saturn Section.

Space Weather Forecast for Pluto

SPACE WEATHER ON PLUTO: As NASA's New Horizons spacecraft prepares to buzz Pluto on July 14th, space weather forecasters have released long distance predictions for the distant dwarf planet.  A region of merged CMEs could be on the verge of hitting Pluto and compressing its atmosphere, but this is expected to happen well after the flyby. Meanwhile, New Horizons has just taken its best picture of Pluto's farside, which is dotted with mysterious dark spots.  Check http://spaceweather.com for more information.

4th of July Geomagnetic Storm

A solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field on July 4th, sparking a moderately strong (G2-class) geomagnetic storm.  High-latitude sky watchers who receive this email before sunrise on July 5th should be alert for auroras. [BAA-ebulletin 00863] Venus-Jupiter Conjunction: 2015 June 30

A short reminder to look out tonight for the close appulse of the two bright planets Venus and Jupiter in the western sky after sunset. For UK observers the weather looks to be very favourable and perhaps the best time to view the spectacle will be around 22.30 local time when they approach to within about 19' of each other. It should be well worth taking a look at the two planets in the same field of view using a medium-power eyepiece, say x100 - x150 magnification.

Venus will be especially brilliant at magnitude -4.4 visible as a 34% illuminated crescent some 32" across. Jupiter at magnitude -1.8, and also measuring 32" in size, has all four gallilean satellites on display: Ganymede being situated furthest from he planet and Io, Europa and Callisto strung out in a line diametrically opposite.

Tell your friends and family too - the conjunction should be quite a sight!
