BRIGHT FIREBALL SEEN OVER BRITAIN

Many people saw a spectacular fireball at around 17.40 GMT last
night.  The unusually bright object, witnessed by observers in
Scotland, England and Wales, was seen to explode, leaving a green
trail in its wake.  There is speculation that the fireball may be a
precursor to the annual Geminid meteor shower which peaks on December
13 -- 14.  The Geminids are unusual in that the parent body is not a
comet but an asteroid, 3200 Phaethon.

The BBC has asked the Society for Popular Astronomy to appeal for
any photos that ENB readers may have obtained of last night's event.
Please forward them to me at    SPAstronomy@aol.com
